Meet Our Culture Champions

Business research tells us that when an employee feels seen, heard, supported and appreciated, they are likely to invest years in working for an organization.

At NCMIC, we have evidence that it’s true. At Employee Rec, when employees are recognized for their years of service, it’s not uncommon to hear the names of people who are 10, 15, even 25-year veterans of our 76 year-old company.

So, what keeps these long timers, these champions of our culture, working diligently for our customers every day? We surveyed a few of our longest tenured employees to see what they love about NCMIC and why they’ve stayed so long in their positions.

What’s the secret to your longevity?

Respect and quite simply, I LOVE what I do and I LOVE where I work. My job is fun, it’s rarely boring, and I get to help people. Also, change can be difficult, scary, unsettling or hard to accept at times, but I can tell you, as I have seen MUCH change over these 25 years, it can also be beautiful, rewarding, exciting and fun! As with everything, it is seen with what lens we view it with. Stay happy and positive my friends!!

Say I’m looking at NCMIC for my next job, what would you tell me about the company that would convince me to apply?

Kindness and their commitment to their people, along with the culture we have built. And just look at the number of people with longevity at this company. Do I need to say more??

What’s a favorite memory about working at NCMIC?

There are so many, but I would say all the hugs I have received over the years!

What’s the secret to your longevity?

The thing that keeps me engaged and motivated is the chiropractic profession. I think NCMIC is unusual in the support we provide for the profession we serve. Without NCMIC’s involvement with—and in—support of the profession, chiropractic would look much different than it does today. I think chiropractors can play a huge role in health care and NCMIC has a part in securing that role.

Say I’m looking at NCMIC for my next job, what would you tell me about the company that would convince me to apply?

The most attractive thing about NCMIC is the culture, which we talk about a lot, but really is an important factor. When I look at where I want to spend my time working, which is a significant chunk of my life, I want a workplace where I feel welcome, valued and afforded the opportunity for development, with a little fun along the way.

What, in your opinion, sets NCMIC apart from other companies?

I think most people are indifferent towards insurance companies or even view them unfavorably. That’s not the case with NCMIC. When I’m on the road, which has been a lot over the years, I hear positivity. I hear about how we went to bat or supported an organization. Those things make a difference. We are not a vendor. We are more than that. We are a key part of the profession.

What’s a favorite memory about working at NCMIC?

I have many fond memories, particularly of people I’ve met and events I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of that have shaped the profession. But I think my fondest memories are when I had the opportunity to expand Dr. Sportelli’s horizons. While traveling together, I’ve had the opportunity to take him to places he would never have visited otherwise. These include Target, Subway and IKEA. I doubt he became a Subway MyWay Rewards program member, but I think I expanded his worldview just a bit. Other great memories are of times I’ve been traveling with other NCMIC folks to events. Road time is when co-workers become friends and I’ve been happy to experience that many times.

What’s the secret to your longevity?

There are a lot of reasons I can give for celebrating 16 years at NCMIC – the benefits, the camaraderie, the food and the fun, and the opportunities to do new things – but in the end, to me, it’s about feeling like there’s no better place to be than NCMIC.

Say I’m looking at NCMIC for my next job, what would you tell me about the company that would convince me to apply?

My job has changed a lot since I was first hired, and I’ve had a few different bosses. Regardless, I’ve always known that the people I work with understand that work and home life really do meld together.

What sets NCMIC apart from other companies?

When I joined NCMIC 16 years ago, I was looking for a place that would give me the flexibility I needed as I dealt with my dad and his Alzheimer’s. It was a delight to know that the company cared enough about me to understand that periodically my dad was a priority. Thankfully, despite a lot of changes in 16 years, that compassion has never wavered.

What’s the secret to your longevity?

It’s two-fold. I have an amazing team. I love how open they are to learning new things and challenging the norm. They bring a unique perspective and they are not afraid to challenge the way things have always been done.

I believe that you should set your own goals and stick to them, never settle. When you work for a place where your goals and the company’s goals align, it makes it easy to come in to work every day.

Say I’m looking at NCMIC for my next job, what would you tell me about the company that would convince me to apply?

Our management is open to hearing unique, new ideas and they continue to make investments in our people and technology to keep us moving forward.

What’s a favorite memory about working at NCMIC?

Traveling to London to meet with our Lloyd’s syndicates. I had never been to Europe, so it was a very memorable experience.
