NCMIC Wants You to Be Well

In April’s INsider newsletter, we told you about the NCMIC Fit program and how employees are on a quest to crush their wellness goals with an eye on the year-end prize of $3,000.

Winners of the NCMIC Fit program must follow three of the eight dimensions of wellness to be eligible to win. The eight dimensions include physical, emotional, social, intellectual, environmental, spiritual, occupational and financial.

HR’s Molly O’Neill said while the NCMIC Fit program specifically incorporates “all aspects of wellness,” NCMIC also prides itself in offering a several different ways employees can focus on their wellness in these areas at work.

With that in mind, we wanted to share what each dimension encompasses and some examples of how NCMIC promotes and supports them.

Physical — Physical means eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep and managing your stress levels.

  •  In early 2023, NCMIC began offering healthy snacks in the canteen, salad bar Wednesdays and mental health awareness activities and events. There’s a fitness center onsite that’s open to all employees and their family members, and NCMIC will reimburse gym memberships to those who use an offsite gym an average of 12 times per month during the year. (Proof of attendance and membership payments are all that’s required.)

Emotional — Emotional wellness means practicing relaxation techniques, such as yoga or meditation, and talking to a therapist or counselor.

  • Effective June 1, NCMIC amended its health plans to include mental health as a primary care provider. This decreased the copay for these visits from $50 to $25. NCMIC also enlists Employee & Family Resources (EFR) is a company-sponsored benefit provided to employees and family members at no cost and offers confidential, and professional services to deal with mental health issues. Additionally, yoga was offered on the lawn earlier this year.

Social — Being social doesn’t mean Facebook or Instagram. It means volunteering your time, joining a club or group or spending time with friends and family.

  • NCMIC encourages its employees to give back to the community through time, talent and treasure. We urge employees to volunteer for their favorite non-profit, giving them time off to do it. We match charitable contributions and donate $2,500 to those organizations where a NCMIC employee serves on its board of directors.

Intellectual — Feeding the mind means reading books, taking classes, learning a new skill or traveling to new places.

  • NCMIC has an educational assistance plan that includes reimbursement for associate, undergraduate and graduate degrees. Reimbursement is also offered for professional designations, seminars, conferences and other continuing education efforts.

Environmental — Recycle, reduce your waste, conserve water and support sustainable businesses.

  • All employees have recycling containers at their desks but, more importantly, NCMIC offers and encourages participation in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts and activities that are the hallmark of a sustainable business model.

Spiritual – Meditate, pray, attend religious services or connect with nature.

  • Taking a walk on NCMIC’s back campus is an excellent way to unwind on a busy day. The new WTCOOO deck on the third floor also has outdoor seating, shade, plants and other amenities that make it a peaceful spot to connect with nature.

Occupational — Occupational wellness means working at a job that you enjoy, setting boundaries between your work and personal life and taking breaks when you need them.

  • NCMIC’s hybrid work schedule allows employees to work from home two days a week and be in the office to collaborate with coworkers three days a week. The flexibility lets employees be close to home if they’re sick or nursing a sick child, offers a quiet environment to concentrate and lends itself to more productivity in a day.

Financial — Financial wellness could be creating a budget, tracking your spending, saving for the future and paying down debt.

  • NCMIC offers both a 401(k)/ (pre-tax) and Roth (k)/ (after-tax) for its employees. Eligibility begins the first day of employment. The company matches employee contributions up to 6% of eligible pay and they are always 100% vested. Your vesting in the company match is based on a two-year vesting schedule (of at least 1,000 hours each).

It is important to remember that all eight dimensions of wellness are interconnected so when one dimension is out of balance, it can affect the others. By actively practicing all dimensions of wellness, you can create a more balanced and fulfilling life—at work and at home.
